Oscars 2019: Predictions

Quick updates:

Hello.

Oscars tonight. I hate everything it’s become. But anywhere here are the people and movies I think are walking away with the naked dude tonight.

ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE

NOMINEES

CHRISTIAN BALE

Vice

BRADLEY COOPER

A Star Is Born

WILLEM DAFOE

At Eternity’s Gate

RAMI MALEK

Bohemian Rhapsody

VIGGO MORTENSEN

Green Book
Thoughts: Let’s face it. Christian Bale was nuts as Dick Cheney. He elevates what is otherwise an average film with an outstanding performance. Again.

ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE

NOMINEES

MAHERSHALA ALI

Green Book

ADAM DRIVER

BlacKkKlansman

SAM ELLIOTT

A Star Is Born

RICHARD E. GRANT

Can You Ever Forgive Me?

SAM ROCKWELL

Vice
Thoughts: Mahershala Ali all the way. My favorite part of this whole category has been Richard E Grant’s absolute delight at being nominated and if that counted, he’d run away with it. But I believe Mahershala Ali is up for Numero Dos this time around. I’m pretty sure Sam Rockwell isn’t winning it though.

ACTRESS IN A LEADING ROLE

NOMINEES

YALITZA APARICIO

Roma

GLENN CLOSE

The Wife

OLIVIA COLMAN

The Favourite

LADY GAGA

A Star Is Born

MELISSA MCCARTHY

Can You Ever Forgive Me?
Thoughts: Everything good about The Favourite runs through its cast. Olivia Colman is phenomenal and deserves this. Completely.

ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE

NOMINEES

AMY ADAMS

Vice

MARINA DE TAVIRA

Roma

REGINA KING

If Beale Street Could Talk

EMMA STONE

The Favourite

RACHEL WEISZ

The Favourite
Thoughts: Rachel Weisz. Emma Stone comes close, but Rachel Weisz essays her role with the snarkiness and wit that one seldom sees in a performance these days.

ANIMATED FEATURE FILM

NOMINEES

INCREDIBLES 2

Brad Bird, John Walker and Nicole Paradis Grindle

ISLE OF DOGS

Wes Anderson, Scott Rudin, Steven Rales and Jeremy Dawson

MIRAI

Mamoru Hosoda and Yuichiro Saito

RALPH BREAKS THE INTERNET

Rich Moore, Phil Johnston and Clark Spencer

SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE

Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, Rodney Rothman, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller

Thoughts: Into the Spider-Verse is my favourite film of the last year barring Hereditary. I was so sure that another Avi Arad property was going to be another shitfest; I was wrong. Into the Spider-verse is lovely. Actually, every film in this category is amazing. I wasn’t very into Ralph breaks the Internet, but I loved Mirai, adored Isle of Dogs and have not seen Incredibles 2[Apparently it is indeed very good]. Hard  one to call this.

CINEMATOGRAPHY

NOMINEES

COLD WAR

Łukasz Żal

Talal Derki, Ansgar Frerich, Eva Kemme and Tobias N. Siebert

RBG

Betsy West and Julie Cohen

NOMINEES

BLACKKKLANSMAN

Barry Alexander Brown

BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY

John Ottman

THE FAVOURITE

Yorgos Mavropsaridis

GREEN BOOK

Patrick J. Don Vito

Thoughts: Vice is a terribly edited movie. Bohemian, Jesus Christ let’s not get started. Blackkklansman is possibly the best of the worst here.

FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM

NOMINEES

Thoughts: Guys. It took me three sittings to get through Roma. But there is a beautiful story there, a charm in its mundanity. Not a particularly strong category where it has to be worried. Netflix is sharpening it’s claws as you read this.

A STAR IS BORN

Screenplay by Eric Roth and Bradley Cooper & Will Fetters

Thoughts: Blackkklansman is probably the most underrated film out of the lot here, and I can’t say I didn’t enjoy most of it. It feels a lot like Green Street Hooligans but its screenplay is absolutely crackling.
